Project 1 - Illustration in response to the written word
A commonality of many illustrators is that a large portion of them create illustrations in response to the written word - e.g. editorial illustrations, book covers, graphic novels etc. It is one of the most common forms of illustration and is more often than not an essential part of having a successful career in the industry as work will often come about from commissions.
My article;
My assigned article is a report on a primary school in Bridgend (South Wales) where locals have stated that angry parents have allegedly been causing 'mayhem' with their so-called 'dangerous' parking during times of the school run.
Recently, parking had been restricted in the area by the council in an effort to reduce congestion and chaos as the 'drop-off' points were not being used correctly. Despite the new implemented restrictions, residents of the area said that new parking issues have escalated to the point where parents are now blocking the road with deckchairs. Many people have also been ignoring the general rules of parking and such have resorted to stopping on double-yellow lines too.
One particular individual described the items and frustrated parents blocking the road as a 'barricade' but that them doing so is not illegal and therefore measures cannot be enforced to stop it. Another individual also claimed to have received death threats from angry parents.
The residents are becoming increasingly more concerned over the safety of the road as one person put it; 'we can't get past with out babies and they're nearly knocking down our children.'
The situation is clearly becoming more and more volatile and concern for safety is growing as there seems to be a lack of care and attention with parents often rushing during the school run; it seems almost inevitable that an accident is imminent. However, despite the frustration of local residents and parents alike, the council seems to be doing very little to help.

Analyzing the article;
This article is clearly aimed at a very localised audience within the Bridgend community/area as it has no effect on the outside world other than to those involved or concerned. There seems to also be a clear divide between the parents and local residents in this case with both seemingly having very different takes on the matter, almost as if they're enemies to one another. Another stand-out observation is that the broader council and authorities seem very much disinterested in the matter, having clearly done nothing to rectify the issue. It's more like a petty civil war between the residents and parents than anything larger.
